On Daugherty’s official visit to Chapel Hill, he had sat on the front row with future Tar Heel teammate Steve Hale during Carolina’s dramatic comeback win over Virginia in Carmichael Auditorium. From Jenks, Oklahoma, and a virtual unknown, Hale was a gifted student and hard-nosed competitor – Smith’s kind of basketball player. The son of a coach at Oral Roberts in Tulsa, Hale also relished the challenge of trying to play at Carolina when few people except Smith thought the herky-jerky lefty had a chance. “I had no idea how good I was,” recalled Hale, who joined the freshman class with Daugherty and the highly recruited Curtis Hunter of Durham. “I came in with no goals because I didn’t know whether they would be too high or too low.”

When Hale played and shot poorly as a freshman in 1983, Smith called him into the office, shut the door, and challenged him to apply the same hard work to basketball as he did to his pre-med studies. Hale spent hours in the gym and by his junior year had turned into Carolina’s best all-around player, setting the single-season school record for free-throw accuracy. He twice had nine assists in a game and once had thirteen, at the time second only to Phil Ford’s fourteen.
